At the Foot of the Cross

by Ralph I Tilley

(Based on Luke 11:5-10)

He had just retired for the night,

His wife and children were in bed.
There were no lights on in the house;

I approached the door with some dread.

It&r    squo;s true, the hour was quite late;
I was no doubt quite presumptuous.
But a friend had come as a guest;

I hoped my neighbor was gracious.

As soon as I knocked on the door,

I told the neighbor my sad plight:
“I only need three loaves of bread;

A guest has arrived for the night.”

He was in no mood to get up,

But I kept knocking just the same.
I needed this food for my friend;

I couldn’t return home in shame.

At last, the man opened the door,

With loaves of bread numbering three.
“I don’t give these 'cause you’re my friend;

It was your persistence, you see.”

When Jesus told this parable,

He taught an important lesson:
"Never give up making requests;

Father will answer in season."
