Paying the Price

by Ralph I. Tilley

"Therefore, snce we are surrounded by such a great cloud of witnesses,
let us throw off everything that hinders and the sin that so easily entangles,
and let us run with perseverance the race marked out for us. Let us fix our eyes on Jesus . . ." -- Hebrews 12:1-2 (NIV)

Do I want to finish strong,
And to the end run this race?
Shall I strive to reach the goal,
Determined to keep the pace?

Lord, help me the price to pay
Like men and women of old,
Who sought You with all their heart
And in faith were very bold.

Grant me grace to take action,
To lay aside every weight,
That which proves a distraction
And all that hinders my gait.

The sidelines are strewn with
Undisciplined, careless men,
Who chose the convenient path,
Failing to conquer within.

With a will made strong by Yours
To the side these weights I lay;
Easily entangled sin
I wrench from my life today.

Now my eyes are fixed on Jesus,
Having done with lesser things;
I run with ease of motion,
As it were on eagles' wings.
