A Parable of Trees

by  Ralph I. Tilley

"All the trees of the field will know that I am the LORD; I bring down the high tree, exalt the low tree, dry up the green tree and make the dry tree to flourish. I am the LORD; I have spoken, and I will perform it." — Ezekiel 17:24 (NASB)

Of all the trees in the forest,
one stood above as the tallest—
   majestic in height,
   a beautiful sight—
exulting in its high stature,
it peered down on all trees lesser.

Another tree was rarely seen,
never thinking to ever preen—
   diminutive size,
   not winning a prize—
lower than all others standing,
contented without comparing.

There was a green tree flourishing,
rich in fruit, it was nourishing—
   symmetric in shape,
   its branches did drape—
greener was it than all its peers,
not seeming to have any fears.

Of all the trees, one was driest,
the soil was poor, the rain lightest—
   with withering roots
   it could bear no fruits.
This tree's future was dismal most,
hope for survival all but lost.

"But that all may know who I am—
for every tree I have a plan:
   the high to bring down,
   the low to crown,
the greenest of all uprooting,
the dry tree bring to flourishing.
I am the LORD, I have spoken—
this plan to perform unbroken."
