My Shepherd's Voice

by Ralph I. Tilley

Above and beyond the din of this world
A voice is heard, I hear its sound.
Turning my soul from all other noises,
I’m anxious to hear what He discloses—
It is my Shepherd’s voice.

I have no fear; He never comes to scold.
For His heart is full of mercy
And His wisdom is suited perfectly.
I’ve learned to trust Him implicitly—
It is my Shepherd’s voice.

Faithfully He warns of predators,
Which are stalking my every move.
“Abide in Me,” He says so distinctly;
With word and faith He arms me securely—
It is my Shepherd’s voice.

Empty of inner strength, I hear Him speak,
Bidding me to a quiet place.
Turning aside I find a meal prepared;
I eat and drink and am refreshed—
It is my Shepherd’s voice.

Whenever I’ve strayed—ever so slightly—
I hear His tones, both true and clear.
He bids me return to the narrow path,
To follow Him with unwavering faith—
It is my Shepherd’s voice.

On those days when all feels dark and dreadful,
A reassuring echo comes.
Pointing me to unfailing promises,
He fills me with rapturous choruses—
It is my Shepherd’s voice.

On that Day—not too far in the distance—
Before the Judge of all I’ll stand.
To hear Him pronounce, “Well done, my servant,”
Will be a sound of all sounds most pleasant—
It is my Shepherd’s voice.
