(Based on Hebrews 10:19-22)
They were plain people, not unlike you and me,
who to the call of God responded
with an innermost born conviction
that His revealed word could be trusted.
Regardless of their current situation,
They were models of faith.
Their respective tasks and exploits were unique
as each one’s gifts and temperament.
But in this they were all just the same:
each saw that God was omnipotent.
All walked steadfastly before Him without blame;
They were models of faith.
To these men and women of deep piety,
faith was a living reality,
compelling them to live uprightly,
rejecting all popularity.
Learning to embrace God’s truth wholeheartedly,
They were models of faith.
Whether offering a better sacrifice,
or preparing to escape a flood,
forsaking home for another land,
or being saved by a lamb’s blood,
These faithful were guided by an unseen hand.
They were models of faith.
But not all were delivered from difficulties:
some in deserts all lonely wandered,
others wore goatskins for their clothing,
some were afflicted and ill-treated.
Others chose death over compromising.
They were models of faith.
Surrounded as we are by such witnesses,
let us put off every encumbrance
and that which so easily trips us,
running this race with all endurance.
Let us gaze with steadfast eyes upon Jesus,
joining those models of faith.
