Lord, Make Me a Pillar

by Ralph I. Tilley

"The one who conquers, I will make him a pillar in the temple of my God. Never shall he go out of it, and I will write on him the name of my God." — Revelation 3:12a ESV

Lord, make me a pillar in your sanctuary,
One who has been made strong by your Spirit.
I want a will and love that will never vary—
To seek your righteousness . . . and to live it.

I am surrounded by compromise and weakness;
The love of many daily grows cold.
Will I join with them in their moral sickness,
Or abide in Christ and in him live bold?

“If you want in my temple to be a pillar,
To have a love and will that is made strong,
You must by my Spirit be an overcomer,
Rejecting every form of sin and wrong.

"To each one who follows me with humility,
Overcoming the flesh, the world, and sin,
I will inscribe God’s name on him indelibly,
Making him a pillar of strength within.”

Whatever the cost, O Lord, make me a pillar;
Strengthen me mightily without, within.
By your Spirit I shall be an overcomer—
Then, please, write your name on me with your pen.
