Lest We Drift

by Ralph I. Tilley

Therefore we must pay much closer attention to what we have heard, lest we drift away from it. For since the message declared by angels proved to be reliable, and every transgression or disobedience received a just retribution, how shall we escape if we neglect such a great salvation? — Hebrews 2:1-3a

To listen very carefully
to the truth we have heard,
Is a message from the Spirit
sent to us from God's Word.

Like a ship without a rudder
      or a vessel without sail,
Is a Christian who does not act
      on the truth without fail.

The message given through angels
      always proved to be true;
Transgressors were justly punished,
      exceptions were but few.

What makes us think we can escape
      God's discipline for sin,
If we respond indifferently
      to the Lord's salvation?

Awake, Christian! Pay attention!
lest the truth of God you neglect.
The storm is raging all around —
      be careful lest you drift!
