I Long to Know You, O Christ!

by Ralph I. Tilley

More than a historical figure,
More than a word on paper,
More than a tradition to savor —
I long to know you, O Christ!

More than a text for my mind to cite,
More than a creed that is right,
More than a prayer to recite —
I long to know you, O Christ!

More than a distant tale to be told,
More than one event grown cold,
More than desiring celestial gold —
I long to know you, O Christ!

More than a church to which I belong,
More than a mission I'm on,
More than a cause righting the wrong—
I long to know you, O Christ!

More than a mere doctrine to be taught,
More than a gift to be sought,
More than an experience inwrought —
I long to know you, O Christ!

More than clear principles to pursue,
More than self to keep in view,
More than an upright life that is true —
I long to know you, O Christ!
