How To Pray

By Ralph I. Tilley

That for which I had fervently prayed,
   Thinking I knew what was best,
My loving, wise Heavenly Father
   Chose to deny my request.

Time and again I petitioned Him,
   Knowing His love was steadfast;
Surely He would give this to His child,
   Since His power was so vast.

With many tears and an aching heart,
   I made my petition known;
I prayed on in faith day after day
   Before a merciful throne.

Then one dark night in anguish of soul
   I heard a voice speak clearly;
Immediately I stopped asking—
   Instead—listened intently.

“I never withhold from my children,
   What I know is for their good;
Trust in Me as your all-wise Father,
   And only pray as you should.

“Listen once again to how My Son
   Taught My children what to say.
Always pray, ‘Thy will be done,’
   This I’ll answer every day.”

On that night I learned a great lesson
   That will never go away:
When praying to my all-wise Father,
   What I must now always say.
