Christ Reigns Within

by Ralph I. Tilley

The kingdom of God has come to reign,
Having conquered my lowly domain.
No more do I want to control my life;
Gone is fleshly resistance and strife.
Christ is King of my heart and my soul;
To Him I’ve given total control—
   Christ reigns within!

Once with great fear my mind debated;
The King’s demands I contemplated:
Self-surrender without condition,
Full allegiance of my volition,
To sacrifice my idol dearest,
Pledge my passions to all that’s purest—
   Christ reigns within!

A kingdom of righteousness and love
Has marched in with my King from above;
Overthrowing every native foe,
Breaking down heavily entrenched woe.
His campaign perseveres without end,
Taking forces reluctant to bend—
   Christ reigns within!

The kingdom of God has come inside;
My heart, the King, has come to reside.
The standard He’s raised is holiness;
His Name will settle for nothing less.
With merciful grace He shapes my will,
Breathing His power in me to fill—
   Christ reigns within!
