Christ Is Victor

by Ralph I. Tilley

The secret of our inner strength
within us does not lie;
The power to say no to sin
must descend from on High.

Our wills are diseased, very frail,
intentions but futile—
Unless we let the Lord prevail,
reigning without rival.

Self-willed efforts are all vain,
resolves but a vapor.
Blood and fire are what are needed—
forgiveness and power.

The blood was shed by Christ himself,
cleansing all the conscience.
The fire blazed strong at Pentecost,
infusing holy pow'r.

Christ, and Christ alone is Victor,
he triumphed o'er his foes;
He defeated all man's rivals
at the Cross, then arose.

Let us turn from self-dependence,
before the Cross lying;
Let us surrender control to
Jesus, on him relying.
