Canaan

by Ralph I. Tilley

If I could take you to a land
where the milk and honey flows;
If I could show you Eschol's grapes
that only my Vinedresser grows—
Would you come?

This place is not without mountains;
its valleys are more than a few.
But the rivers here are many,
in the morning there's always dew.
Would you come?

The burdens here are much lighter;
peace is ev'rywhere to be found.
Joy fills all the fertile valleys;
God's love and holiness abound.
Will you come?

You say, "That is the very place
my spirit has been longing for,
Since God brought me out of Egypt
many wilderness years before!
I want to come."

But first you must cross the Jordan,
leaving all self-interest behind.
You must die to self and others,
ev'rything on the altar bind.
Will you still come?

"By God's grace I do die to self,
looking to Jesus, not others.
I bind my all on God's altar,
and now see the parting waters.
I come!"
