My Advocate & Friend

by Ralph I. Tilley

"Even now my witness is in heaven; my advocate is on high; my intercessor is my friend as my eyes pour out tears to God . . ." — Job 16:19-20 (NIV)

"My little children, I am writing these things to you so that you may not sin. And if anyone sins, we have an Advocate with the Father, Jesus Christ the righteous; and He Himself is the propitiation for our sins and not for ours only, but also for those of the whole world." — I John 2:1, 2 (NASB)

I have no plea, for God's righteous Law I've broken —
   the holy word is plain to see;
   his will was fully known by me.
What can I do, where can I flee?

The Law shouts, "You must die; no pardon can there be!
   God's word is absolute for all;
   There is no exception, no recall.
The verdict is plain: You must go!"

Then I heard a surer sound, one above the rest:
   "I sent My Son to take your place;
   I filled Him full of truth and grace.
Christ speaks for you; his blood avails."

The ever-living One dwells at the Father's side.
   He shows his wounds when I have failed,
   to plead my cause when I'm assailed.
Christ is my Friend! His blood avails!
