A True Brother

by Ralph I. Tilley

"A friend loves at all times, and a brother is born for adversity."
-- Proverbs 17:17 (NIV)

I labored with a heavy load,
   filled with anxiety and care;
My shoulders sagged, as did my soul,
   the burden was too great to bear.

Afar, a brother watched my struggle,
   making no effort to come near;
Shouting instead, "Cheer up, fella,
   the day is all sunny and clear."

I stumbled on doing my best,
   the end of the road to make.
Wanting to be strong in this test—
   lest under my great load I break.

Then I felt another at my side,
   he placed his hand gently on me;
Not an empty word did he speak,
   and his tears flowed warmly and free.

I began to regain lost strength
   the hour I felt my brother's hand;
And saw the tears flow from his eyes—
   convinced that he did understand.
